Athlete's Corner
R.I.C.E.
When
a condition ends in "itis," inflammation is the culprit. If a
joint is overused, it might develp tendonitis. If a runner's foot
muscles and fascia are painful, it might be labled plantar
fasciitis. Athletes are often reluctant to scale back training,
to use the affected area less so that inflammation can subside. Using
the R.I.C.E. technique at the first sign of inflammation can help
reduce symptoms before they can become debilitating.
Rest
the affected muscles and/or joints,
Ice
the area 10 minutes every hour,
Compress
with a bandage, or with massage if the injury is not acute (severe and
recent), and
if possible, Elevate
it above your heart until swelling subsides.
